Welcome to the Woodland Preschool
About Us

The Woodland Preschool is an outdoor adventure preschool located in the Kings Park neighborhood of North Springfield, VA. We offer a full-time program and welcome children from two years of age to kindergarten. We are primarily an English spoken program that embraces Swedish culture and language. We fully embrace the Scandinavian approach to outdoor learning in all seasons, and will incorporate some Swedish language throughout our day when possible.

We spend the majority of our day in nature. Our mornings begin in our expansive backyard with a morning snack and circle time as we settle in, followed by a full morning of adventures in the adjacent forest. Lunch is enjoyed outdoors, and in the afternoon, we have indoor activities as well as venturing outside again for continued forest learning.
We believe in a play-based and child-led curriculum where the child's emerging interest leads the way. Our teachers are highly qualified to scaffold each child’s growth and development in a natural way to help them discover answers to their curiosities about the world around them.
We provide a safe, warm, friendly and nurturing environment in which the uniqueness of each child is honored. The children learn to develop friendships based on trust and respect, and all children are given equal opportunities. Children gain positive self-worth and confidence which is essential while exploring new ideas.

We are outdoors rain or shine. As the Swedish saying goes: "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing"

Philosophy

We believe that learning is most powerful when it is experiential, which is why hands-on, active engagement forms the foundation of our educational philosophy. Our approach is rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy — a student-centered model that emphasizes self-directed, active learning within relationship-driven environments. Research shows that when students take ownership of their learning, they remain more motivated, sustain their interest and effort over longer periods, and internalize the connection between effort and achievement. In addition, self-directed, active learning fosters the development of self-regulation and executive function skills, both of which are essential for academic success and lifelong achievement.

The Role of the Teacher - Teachers support each child's unique learning journey, recognizing their many possibilities and serving as guides and models throughout the day.

-
Setting Expectations
Clear, consistent, age-appropriate expectations help children feel safe, confident, and respected. Expectations are thoughtfully introduced, developmentally explained, and gently reinforced. We use redirection, empathy, and patience to guide children, always supporting them with opportunities to try again and succeed.
-
Modeling Behavior
Teachers can engage in children’s play to model social interactions, language development, and appropriate use of materials. By demonstrating how to play together, share space, and express ideas, we help children internalize classroom expectations in a joyful, meaningful way.
-
Conflict Management
Emotional development is a key focus in early childhood. Teachers stay attentive, offering support when children struggle with big emotions like frustration or anger. As children grow, we begin to step back—encouraging them to navigate social and emotional challenges independently, while staying nearby to scaffold their learning. Tantrums are natural, and we approach them with calm, guidance, and compassion.
-
Teamwork & Consistency
A unified teaching team ensures that children receive consistent messages and expectations. When teachers are aligned, children feel more secure, boundaries are clearer, and cooperation comes more naturally.
-
Routines
Children thrive with predictable routines. Knowing what to expect—when to eat, rest, or go home—helps reduce stress and builds a sense of stability. Transitions are smoothed with simple heads-ups and consistency, while still allowing room for flexibility on special days.
-
Problem Solving
We provide children with tools to resolve conflict and express themselves. This includes giving them words to describe feelings, asking open-ended questions, and encouraging reflection. Mistakes are framed as learning opportunities. We offer praise, show interest in their ideas, and gently prompt them to find solutions—fostering independence, empathy, and creative thinking. Over time, they learn not only to solve their own problems, but to support their peers in doing the same.
